Ever since the 13th century wine-growers in Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne have cultivated vineyards on our hillsides, which have proved to be an exceptional terroir, just a stone’s throw from the papal city of Avignon: terraces of rounded orange pebbles, exposed to the sun and wind of our mediterranean climate, in the southern end of the Rhône valley.
On this chalk and clay soil, the pebbles play an essential rôle, protecting the earth from erosion, enabling drainage et limiting evaporation in the summer. They act as a warm blanket for the vines : they stock the daytime heat and radiate it at night.

All the conditions are met to produce excellent Grenache grapes, the main grape variety of the appellation which are then associated with the Syrah and Mouryèdre varieties in order to obtain powerful red wines.

Our village was first granted the Côte-du-Rhône appellation in 1937, then the Côtes-du-Rhône Village label in 1997, and finally the Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Gadagne in 2012.
You probably noticed « Gadagne », and not « Châteauneuf-de-Gadagne »… The wine-growers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape were strongly opposed to the use of the beginning of their name « Châteauneuf », no doubt afraid that we would put their wine in the shade… The truth is that our terrains are very similar, formed by the same geological thrust, and they are the only ones in the Vaucluse where a variety of heather, the Maure Lavendar grows.
The locals are extremely proud of their wines.

We will be delighted to let you discover our fine local wines, either here in the L’Oréliane or at the local wineries (7 wine estates and one cooperative winery).
Some of them propose a walk in their vineyards, a visit of the winery and estate, wine-tasting apéritifs or even musical events. We will be happy to give you all the information you’d like about that.
Like all good local products many events are organised to honour them.
The best of them is the traditional ‘Ban des Vendanges’ in the heart of the village, which takes place early September, and also the more recent « Terroir en fêtes » in June. Here you will have the opportunity to taste local wines as well as numerous other delicious local delicacies and specialities.

Sharing a glass with friendly people should definitely be on your ‘to do’ list !
